Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization the the helps people get the homes they need. Habitat offers a variety of volunteer opportunities in our community from working on a build site to helping out in their ReStore. This year Habitat is starting two builds on our very own Moore St. and would love for Maggie Walker to be involved. Everyday shifts are 10A-2P and 2P-5:30PM • Group sizes are typically 10-12 people per shift • If your group is larger than the typical or needed size for the ReStore and/or build site we can set up a joint shift at both locations to accommodate your larger group. • Help is needed to: o help with unloading and loading donations o Work in our home décor pricing area o Cashier and donation driver volunteer positions also available for regular volunteers who meet requirements set up by the ReStore Volunteer Coordinator and staff. • Contact Jenn Wilson (ReStore Volunteer Coordinator) or myself to set up a ReStore group. We will first be building two, two-story, single family homes. Here is a breakdown of what we will be working on: May: drywall • 5/4- 8 spots • 5/11- 6 spots • 5/12- 6 spots • 5-13- 8 spots • 5/14- 8 spots • 5/18- 6 spots • 5/19- 6 spots • 5/20- 8 spots • 5/21- 8 spots June: painting and trim (email me for these dates and details) July: trim, trim paint, flooring (email me for these dates and details) August: carpentry and fence (email me for these dates and details) BUILD 2 (8AM-3PM): Oakwood New Build- single story new construction project in Church Hill- I am currently working to fill February and March dates on this project. Starts February 24th- Ends early July (check website to see dates and times) The Monument Ave., 10K is Saturday, April 9, 2016. The Maggie Walker Key Club is partnering with the Kiwannis Club to assist with the last water stop located at Monument Ave. & N. Davis Avenue. Set-up will start early Saturday morning about 6:00am, provide water to runners, and then clean up about 12 noon or so.
Kiwannis Club members Tom Earle & Cobey Wagoner are Captaining the water stop this year. Volunteers will be assigned to the following positions: Course Marshal: the marshals are assigned to corners and directional changes in the course and are expected to direct the runners. Keeping everyone on-course is very important for the neighborhood and for those runners that consider finish time important. In the past, many young marshals have teamed-up to create fun and fantastic cheers to encourage the runners.
