Wings for Autism / Wings for All
Wings for Autism®/Wings for All™ are airport “rehearsals” specially designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The programs are designed to alleviate the stress that families who have a child with autism or intellectual/developmental disabilities experience when flying. It provides families the opportunity to practice entering the airport, obtaining boarding passes, going through security and boarding a plane. Airport, airline, Transportation Security Administration professionals, and other personnel also have the opportunity to observe, interact, and deliver their services in a structured learning environment. Some examples of what volunteers will be doing include: helping at registration desk, helping with set up, being a point person at certain locations such as the ticket counter, security, etc., (Volunteer Age requirements: HS students and older are welcome to volunteer.) Location - Richmond International Airport (parking will be paid for) Date/Time - Saturday, November 5th (9:45am-3:00pm) How to Volunteer - Contact Tammy Burns, [email protected] to volunteer or with questions. POWHATAN LIBRARY BOOK SALE -- scheduled for first week of November. They can always use teens to help with customers and carry books to cars and organizing on Saturday, November 5 between 10:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. Also need assistance to help pack up the sale at 3:00 P.M. This involves packing books in boxes, moving those boxes, folding tables and general clean-up. This generally takes about 2 hours so it would be from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Students may choose to do one or the other or both activities.

Sylvia's Sisters will have a booth at the Midlothian Village Day Festival. We need a couple of volunteers to help with the booth from 10 to 3 (this can be split into a couple of shifts). If you would like to help give out information about Sylvia's Sisters at our booth, please email Laura Davidson at [email protected] . They are happy to have you no matter what your time constraints are.
They also need volunteers to help out the Midlothian Junior Women's Club (the organizers of the festival) with various jobs during the day. Their sign up is athttp://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4ba9a723a6f94-35th. When signing up there, please indicate that you are representing Sylvia's Sisters. You will need to list Laura Davidson as a contact. Her phone number is 804-839-7955. Please also email Laura with the time slot you are covering. They also ask that all volunteers provide a parent's cell phone number to be used in case of emergencies. Please stop by their tent to check in if you are helping with the festival. Be sure to bring your community service forms so they can be signed. The festival is held at Midlothian Middle School at 13501 Midlothian Turnpike.
