ARE YOU A LEADER AT MWGS? WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPEARHEAD THE EFFORT TO ORGANIZE 40 FELLOW CLASSMATES TO VOLUNTEER FOR FLAG FOOTBALL ON ONE SATURDAY IN OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER? A SECOND LEADER IS ALSO NEEDED TO ORGANIZE 20 CLASSMATES FOR ONE SUNDAY IN OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER.
HERE'S YOUR OPPORTUNITY!
Jacob’s Chance runs a year-round sports program called River City Buddy Ball. This year they will be starting October 1 - 2 and are hoping to have a Maggie Walker Weekend, where Maggie Walker Students can be the volunteers for our Saturday morning Football and Sunday afternoon Tennis programs. The time commitment is:
Flag Football is Saturdays October 1 until November 19 from 9:30am until 11am, at the Glen Allen Fields on Brookley Road
Tennis is Sundays October 2 until November 20 from 4pm to 6pm at the tennis courts at Glen Allen High School, Staples Mill in Henrico.
In order to secure the amount of volunteers needed and create an inviting and encouraging buddy program, Jacob's Chance would love for Maggie Walker Governor’s School to indicate a day in which they will bring lots of volunteers from the school to be our buddy volunteers. We need about 40 volunteers for football and 20 volunteers for tennis.
As background, they provide a safe, fun non-competitive sports program for special needs players. They have developmentally, mentally, and physically disabled players and their abilities range from needing someone to cheer them on to full-time assistance on the field. We match up players with buddies based on the needs and comfort of the buddy and the player. They have had quality volunteers in the past from Maggie Walker and wish to expand our outreach and our volunteer numbers.
Also note that they have a winter basketball program and spring baseball and tennis that will provide future opportunities for meaningful community service as they would also like to have a Maggie Walker Governor’s School coordinated day.
Right now the first two weekends in October are covered. They are looking for MWGS to host the weekend of weekend of 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 11/20.
