Christine and Fritz Kemmerly spent part of their summer assisting at STEM Camp through the Goochland County Public Schools. Christine commented that she volunteered at the camp because she wanted to share her love of math and science with younger students and help them gain a better understanding of the world around them. Her positive contributions to the camp inspired participants to become interested in science and math and to excel in school. Fritz indicated that he selected this activity because he wanted to impact the learning landscape and educate children in STEM, allowing him to see education in a whole new light. He was also inspired by the joy and awe of the students in the program, and he hopes to continue working toward improving education in his community. The Principal indicated that Christine's and Fritz's work was "excellent" and that both were a "wonderful support." Way to go, Christine and Fritz!

Daniel Jovin donated 127 hours at the V.A. McGuire Hospital. He spent his time as a Youth Volunteer working with Veterans and active duty patients. This experience also gave Daniel the opportunity to see what it was like working in the medical field and allowed him to see the challenges that Veterans and those who work in healthcare face. Thanks for donating so much of your time this summer, Daniel!
This past summer, Tory Farmer contributed 37.5 hours at the Math Science Innovation Center and 36 hours at Swim RVA. The Administrator at the MathScience Innovation Center commented that "Tory was extremely helpful not only within the classroom but outside the classroom environment. He is an excellent role model to the students and it was a pleasure to have him here!" Tory's work involved teaching students math and science, as well as demonstrating why it is important to learn these subjects.
At Swim RVA, he worked as a camp counselor working with kids learning to swim. The Director of Programs found Tory to be "a great asset to the camp staff" and "was always willing in any way needed." Good job, Tory (and wonderful reflection pieces, too!). Shannon Colson spent 93 this summer volunteering at Faison School for Autism. She stated that she selected this particular community service activity because she is passionate about autism awareness and also interested in special education. The program supervisor wrote that "Shannon was an excellent addition to [their] team. She is always willing to help and had a friendly and professional rapport with students and staff." Her work had a positive impact on the students she worked with, as well as providing teachers and staff some much needed assistance. Congrats, Shannon, your work reflects well on you and MWGS!
Quan donated 53 hours of his time this past summer at the Science Museum of Virginia. He commented that he enjoys science, teaching, and meeting new people, and that working as a gallery educator allowed him to do all of these things. Good job, Quan, on working with so many young people learn more about science.
Adriana Thompson (12) Volunteers at the GIFT program at Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital9/18/2015 Adriana Thompson donated 40 hours of community service this past summer (2015) through the GIFT Program (Great Influences for Tomorrow) at Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital. Her work involved assisting nurses in the Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit, and included everything from taking the weight, temperature, and blood pressure of patients as well as giving them their meals and visiting with those who felt lonely or scared. The volunteer coordinator commented that "Adriana was my go-to person -- she always stepped up to the plate and took the challenge." You're a superstar, Adriana!
Caroline Ryan volunteered this summer (2015) at the Bon Secours Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EPAP). Her worked involved creating and managing 2 new social media platforms to use for communication within the Virginia Chapter of Bon Secours EAPA. Caroline volunteered for this opportunity because she is interested in social media and the role in can play in public relations. She created one private group and one public group Facebook page and managed both throughout the summer as she taught employees how to utilize this new form of communication. This was important because the organization needed a way to reach out to the public and also have a way to stimulate discussion between chapter members. The President of the chapter commented that "Caroline was wonderful, mature, and knowledgeable. She was a pleasure to work with, and a tremendous asset to the organization locally and nationally." Way to go, Caroline!
Omri Ware volunteered at the Ruby Leonard Food Pantry in Powhatan, Virginia, donating a few hours each month during July, August, and September. The food panty, designed to help those in need in the Powhatan community, provided Omri with the opportunity to directly interact with people in his community. Omri stated that, in addition to feeling good about helping others, he has also learned "an incredible amount of interpersonal skills through interactions with the clients they help." The Manager at the Food Pantry commented that "Omri has a wonderful attitude and interacts with our clients as they come in -- he is loved by all. He works hard and is a pleasure to work with." Great job giving back to your community, Omri!
George Vithoulkas volunteered at RVAccess summer camp on July 22 and 24, 2015, to help children with disabilities play soccer. He has participated in this event for a few years and really enjoys this volunteer activity. He believes his contributions "made a positive impact on the community because it gave children with disabilities a venue to enjoy playing soccer, learn cooperation, and lead social lives." Keep up the great work!
